Updated Lightfastness Standards Challenge Outdoor Sublimation Prints

Updated lightfastness standards from ASTM and ISO are setting higher requirements for outdoor printed textiles, challenging sublimation prints used in flags, banners, and awnings. The new standards require 2–3 years of outdoor durability (fading less than 20%) under typical sunlight exposure. Many standard sublimation inks, especially lighter colors, fade faster when exposed to UV. In response, ink manufacturers have launched UV‑resistant sublimation inks containing special stabilizers, but they are more expensive and may require higher transfer temperatures.

For print shops using Xinflying sublimation printers for outdoor applications, it is essential to use inks and substrates that meet the new standards. Customers in signage and event industries will increasingly demand compliance. Print shops can also apply UV protective over‑laminates or use fabrics with built‑in UV blockers. The new standards may shift some volume from sublimation to UV DTF or direct UV printing for outdoor graphics, as those technologies inherently have better UV resistance. Staying informed about standard updates is critical for serving the outdoor market.
